Woman, 80, injured by falling metal during procession
MANILA
Emergency response teams of the Philippine Red Cross rushed an elderly
devotee to the Ospital ng Maynila due to head injury she suffered after a piece
of metal fell on her during the procession of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo.
The condition of Adelina Bautista, 80, is unknown.
PRC officials said it was not immediately clear where the metal came from.
As of 11 am on Satutday, while the
procession was still at P. Burgos
Street, Manila, Red Cross
volunteers had responded to the
needs of 169 procession
participants.
PRC chairman Senator Richard J.
Gordon said most of the
complaints were were dizziness,
foot injuries, hypertension and
insufficient oxygen. Meanwhile, a partially blind 52-year-old grandfather was
assisted by his three grandchildren in helping pull the carriage of the image of
the Black Nazarene.
Devotees from all walks of life troop to the grand procession of the Black
Nazarene, a revered ebony-colored image of Christ believed to have
miraculous powers, as it is paraded around Quiapo on January 9 of each year.
Grandfather Arthur Cecilio, who has been a devotee since he was 27 years old,
joined the procession barefoot.
