Hundreds flee to Jordan refugee center
Distressed workers mostly victims of illegal recruitment

MANILA

Hundreds of Filipino workers have taken refuge at a facility for distressed
nationals in Amman, Jordan after running away from their "abusive employers'.

Most of the 236 refugees did not have working permits and only 56 had proper
documents, the Department of Labor and Employment said.

All are believed to be victims of illegal recruitment.

Labor Secretary Arturo Brion again warned would-be OFWs against working
abroad without work visas and other legal documents.

Last month, Brion suspended deployment of domestic helpers to Jordan after
hundreds of undocumented service workers ended up at the refugee center
run by the Philippine embassy in Amman.

Brion  also warned  workers from dealing with agencies offering assistance
for jobs in Dubai on tourist visas.

He said workers seeking employment abroad illegally are putting themselves
at great risk.

“I appeal once again to workers to check first with the Philippine Overseas
Employment Administration the existence of job orders in Dubai and other
places abroad for any offer they may get from agencies and not to leave the
country without proper documents,” he said.

“Undocumented workers are more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation since
there are no contracts to bind their employers with responsibilities and
corresponding liabilities that usually go with legitimate employment contracts.”
