Canada delegation to hire 300 nurses
Recruitment drive set for February 28 to March 8 in Manila

MANILA

A health delegation from Canada is visiting the Philippines to  recruit about
300 nurses for Saskatchewan province, which is facing a crunching shortage
of health-care professionals.

Recruitment will take place from February 28 to March 8 in Manila. A number of
Philippine agencies have been hired to coordinate the process, delegation
head John Larmet said.

The group will pre-screen 600 applicants before offering the jobs to 300.

The Saskatchewan Union of Nurses has estimated there are between 800
and 1,000 vacant positions in the province and more than 1,400 practising
nurses will be eligible to retire by 2010.

A previous delegation from the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region travelled to
the Philippines in November to recruit nurses.

It had 550 applicants and offered 90 people jobs. Despite Saskatchewan's
sometimes-frigid weather, the region found luring the nurses easy by offering
competitive salaries.

The latest trip is part of the Saskatchewan Party's election promise to recruit
800 new nurses to combat the shortage.

The candidates will take an English test and some will take a nursing exam.

The Saskatchewan Registered Nursing Association will check nurses'
credentials to ensure they have the training they need to work in Canada.

Then, managers from specialized areas will interview applicants the recruiting
agencies have flagged as qualified for hard-to-recruit positions.

An entry-level nurse in Canada earns about C$23 (P1,035) per hour .
