35 illegal workers stopped at airport
Most were bound for for HK, Singapore and Middle East
MANILA
Immigration authorities have stopped 35 would-be overseas workers who
tried to leave the country on tourist visas.
Most of the passengers were bound for Hong Kong, Singapore and the Middle
East, immigration commissioner Marcelino Libanan said.
They were taken off their flights during a crackdown on illegal workers and
suspected snakeheads last month.
Also stopped from leaving the country were seven government workers who
did not have travel clearance from their departments and three others on the
bureau’s hold-departure list.
Libanan said the action was part of a stepped-up campaign against illegal
workers and the so-called "escort service".
He said undocumented OFWs are prone to abuse and maltreatment in
foreign countries because they are unable to avail of legal protection from the
authorities.
Snakeheads and people in the illegal "escort service" are adding to the
worsening problem of undocumented workers by illegal arranging passage.
