Government urged to 'safety net' to shipyard workers
MANILA
The overseas recruitment industry urged the Department of Labor and
Employment to give workers better protection against industrial accidents and
work-related illness.
The call was prompted by a rash of accidents at the Hanjin shipyard in the
Subic Bay Freeport in which three more workers died.
The deaths brought the number of fatalities at the shipyard to six this year.

Hanjin has
more than
10,000 Subic
workers
employed in
construction
and repair of
ocean vessels
Jackson Gan, vice-president of the Federated
Association of Manpower Exporters said local
workers should be provided with life
insurance and hospitalization benefits similar
to what overseas workers are receiving from
the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.
Gan said that workers who suffered
work-related accidents received only the
barest benefits such as burial expenses from
companies at the Hanjin Heavy Industries
Construction Corp site.
Hanjin has farmed out certain operations to sub-contractors.
The South Korean shipbuilder has more than 10,000 workers in Subic
employed in construction and repair of ocean vessels.
Gan said contractual workers are receiving minimum wages and are only
working on temporary status with sub-contractors.
