'Occult' messages found in mobile phone, among belongings

JOSE MARCELO HONG KONG

The mystery surrounding the death of  Vicenta “Vicky” Flores took a bizarre twist
with revelations of occult-like text messages found in her mobile phone and in
a letter  among the late domestic helper’s belongings.

An initial police report released on April 22 mentioned text messages in her
mobile phone as among the evidence gathered by police shortly after the maid’
s body was found floating off Tung Chung pier on April 11.

It was later revealed that several of the text
messages, shown by the police to Flores’
sister Irene Flores-Reguis, contained occult
references in Tagalog with mentions of “hari”
and “princesa”, among others.

Also found inside the maid’s room was a
letter in yellow pad paper written in Latin also
likewise bears strange references.

The police, officials said, have already
questioned the sender of the text messages,
identified as a certain Nelson from the
Philippines.
The Coroner’s Court has yet to come up with its full report on the death of
Flores, 31-year-old and single from Lubo, Batangas who had worked as a
maid for a childless Hong Kong couple for 12 years.

She was seen fleeing her employers’ home in Discovery Bay, barefoot and in
pajamas, on April 7 and was last seen alive being told to alight from an
airport-bound bus in Tung Chung because she had no money to pay for the
fare.

Migrant organizations and a support group of Discovery Bay residents had
held vigils and protest rallies calling on the police to look deeper into Flores’
death.

A blog has also been opened giving regular updates about the case.
The case has been initially considered closed by the police after a post-
mortem revealed “nothing suspicious” with the circumstances surrounding
the death.

The concern groups as well as Philippine officials are hoping the Coroner’s
Court will order an inquest into Flores’ death to settle troubling questions that
have been left unanswered by the initial police report.

“I’m hoping there will be an inquest so everything can be looked into. Kasi
tetestigo roon ’yong pathologist sa mortuary. Iyong mga nag-imbestiga na
pulis sasabihin doon kung ano ang nakita nila,” said vice consul Val Roque,
head of the the Assistance to Nationals section of the consulate.

Both the consulate and Reguis have sent letters to the Hong Kong
authorities  asking for copies of the autopsy and coroner’s reports. “But we
were told that it will take time. May hinihintay pa raw results ng toxicology
tests,” Roque said.

Flores’ remains is set to be repatriated next week. A final memorial service
was scheduled at the Universal Funeral Parlour in Hung Hom on May 18.
