Extent of flood damage begins to emerge
P5b worth of crops and infrastructure destroyed; 246 dead

MANILA

About P5 billion worth of crops and property have been destroyed and more
than 240 people are confirmed dead and three dozen are missing in the wake
of last weekend's killer floods.

The government said the raging waters wiped out more than P3 billion worth
of crops and P2 billion worth of infrastructure. The figures don't include
damage to private property.

Meanwhile, GSIS opened a P5 billion disaster loan facility  and Pab-Ibig also
began providing emergency loans to members.

Also, the education department
announced that classes will
remain suspended until Friday.

Emergency rescue operations
were continuing even as relief
efforts accelerated amid
warnings of two potentially
disastrous weather
disturbances looming on the  
fringes of the country.

The National Disaster
Coordinating Coincil put the
death toll at 246, with 105 in
Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna,
Batangas, Rizal and Quezon);
101 in the National Capital
Region; 37 in Central Luzon; and
three in the Cordillera
Administrative Region.

The number of missing persons
rose to 38 -- 20 from
Calabarzon,; nine in Ilocos;
seven in Central Luzon; one in
Cagayan Valley; and one in CAR.
There were five injured people: three in Kabayan, Benguet; one in Sta. Cruz,
Laguna; and also one in Cavite. Typhoon Ondoy's six hours of rain and the
resulting floods displaced 335,000 families or almost two million people.

Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, said damage to crops has risen to nearly
four-times more than earlier estimates, with farm losses reaching P3.2 billion.

An estimated 126,271 hectares of farmland have been wasted, he said.

Some 180,000 metric tonsof rice worth P3.1 billion have been lost,
comprising almost 3 per cent of the country's expected rice production for the
year.

About 20,000 families in the provinces of Cagayan, Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan,
Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna,
Quezon and Rizal were affected by Ondoy's wrath.

Ya said total areas in Bulacan, Zambales, Pampanga, Bataan, Tarlac and
Nueva Ecija that are currently submerged and affected is around the vicinity of
33,000 hectares.
